"Honest-to-God, kitsch-free, no pretensions painting."
- NEWCITY, Chicago
By Victoria Peabody
For many
years Stephen Duren has danced between
the two distinct painting styles of abstraction and realism. Chicago Tribune critic, Alan Artner,
lauded the "modest,
unaffected freshness" of his small landscape paintings.
Nathan Matteson of Newcity, wrote,
"The work
that shows him at his best is the kind that crosses those
useless boundaries of representational and abstract."
